Listener Poll: Ranking the Wolverine Movies

March 6, 2017

Like most of the country I made it a point to go check out the new movie Logan this past weekend ($237M worldwide in it's opening weekend). This is, of course, the final film in which Hugh Jackman portrays the iconic X-Men comic book character Wolverine on the big screen (It's yet to be determined if Fox will recast Wolverine for future installments).

Full disclosure: I thought the movie was great. One of the best films in the X-Men franchise, and a great way to send off Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. However, it's Rated R for a reason, in fact only the 2nd R-rated film in the X-Men franchise after last year's box office hit Deadpool, so you may not want to let young kids see it.

So it got me thinking last Logan the best Wolverine movie ever made? It certainly should be considered. Some outlets are calling it Oscar worthy. I want your thoughts though....I created a poll listing all of the films in which Wolverine was a prominent character (Note: I did not include the cameo appearance in X-Men: First Class or the brief appearance in X-Men Apocalypse.) Let me know which Wolverine movie you liked the best:

My Take:

Best Wolverine Film: X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)
While I loved Logan and totally understand the argument for it being the best Wolverine film, it's centered around one character. And I think the best part about the X-Men films as opposed to other comic book movies is that we get to see so many beloved characters come together for an epic adventure. Days of Future past brings together the biggest collection of X-Men to date, led by Jackman's time traveling Wolverine on a mission to save mutants & humanity from a post apocalyptic future, and was considered the best X-Men movie ever made by many at the time.

Worst Wolverine Film:  X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)
You could argue for X-Men: The Last Stand here, but Origins was the first solo Wolverine film fans had been asking for for years, and it did not deliver. I'm a fan of all of these movies, so I hate calling any of them the worst....but the majority of critics & fans agreed this movie just wasn't that good.

Honorable Mention:  The Wolverine (2013)
This was the first Wolverine film directed by James Mangold (Walk the Line, 3:10 to Yuma), who went on to direct Logan. Be sure to check this underrated movie out if you plan on seeing Logan. Most of the X-Men/Wolverine movies have been on cable quite a bit recently.
